For the final project of the year, we worked in groups to use our understanding of biology to identify a real world problem and solve it with some sort of biotechnology. We were then supposed to present our idea to a biotech company so they could further investigate the program we had in mind.
Content
- GMO's-an organism that was had its genes altered so that it garners new traits.
- Biotech-using biological processes for industrial and other purposes, especially the genetic manipulation of microorganisms for the production of antibiotics, hormones, etc.
- Germplasm-group of germ cells
- Growth Hormone-a regulatory substance that influences the growth of an organism
Reflection
We were given a very open concept of a project to round out the year. I think my team and I did a good job of finding our own path and making up a plan to do some good in the world. We were stunted at time because of the vagueness of the project description but that was all built in to the project and helped us be more creative with it.
I learned that i could really captain a group of people if I really set my mind to getting to work every day and not messing around. When we started work on the presentation, I got off to a good start and pushed the group to the end of the semester. It showed me that not only I could be leader but I can easily turn on the switch of being a good, productive student as I got a lot of work done everyday in class.
While I say I lead the group, I didn't really get my team totally involved. During work on the presentation I took charge and didn't leave much for the rest to make their own and instead hogged the project and just let them build off of what I thought should have been there. We were not working as a well oiled machine but rather one engine pushing through with the rest tagging along. I think I could improve on my communication and the group as a whole could have done better with being a complete team being that all the intangible factors that make a group work well weren't really there. I will continue working on my communication and not being bossy.
