PCR&Gel Electrophoresis Lab
PCR & Gel Electrophoresis Lab:PCR & Gel Electrophoresis Lab:In this lab we learned about all repeats. Everyone took samples of their own DNA and mixed it with chemicals and heating/cooling them. We dyed our samples and put them into agarose gel so we could see the all repeat bands in our DNA. Below is my lab report on the lab.

CLADOGRAM
DESCRIPTION:
During this project we were first shown a small container of little hardware pieces. We were asked to group them by characteristics to make the smallest groups possible. This was our first introduction to the project. Then we learned what a cladogram is and how to make one. We were tasked with making our own cladogram that told a story of how the hardware "evolved."
CONTENT:
I explained the concept of evolution in the content of my timeline project. A cladogram is a branching diagram showing the relationship between a number of species. Pictures of ours are above
Mutation
A mutation is a random change in DNA that gets passed down for generations developing new traits.
Natural Selection
This is when nature makes certain characteristics beneficial and some negative. The ones with the beneficial traits stay alive and pass on traits and the ones with negative die off and these negative traits are no longer a part of that species.
Speciation
Speciation is basically just the process of new species being created.
REFLECTION:
During this project, I wrote most of the storyline to the species and organized all of the hardware pieces. I didn't have the biggest contribution to my group and often wandered around with a short attention span. Near the end of the project I got really productive and helped out my team a lot getting the whole story done. I learned that I still need to work on my focus and I think I should take more of a lead in projects because that is where I thrive. I also learned I am good at storytelling and thinking quickly. I could have payed more attention to may group and helped them more instead of hanging around other groups. I also could have tried to get my other teammates more involved. For example, I spent about a week just sitting with other groups because i didn't want/know how to do the work.

TIMELINE PROJECT
DESCRIPTION:
During this project, with a species of our choice, we made a timeline of how our species came to be. In our case we picked the cow. We were told to find 4 ancestors but I could only find three. We were allowed to show our timeline in any way but my partner and I decided to go with a google slides.
CONTENT:
All species are involved in an ongoing change in the genetic composition of a population. This is called evolution. In the slideshow, I describe different genetic traits in new species. There was not much information on the earlier species but all the basics are covered.
Sympatric Speciation:
This is when a species evolves into 2 different species by mutating and passing on beneficial traits.
Behavioral Isolation:
This is when parts of a species starts behaving different which turns it into a new species.
Geographical Isolation:
This is when a species gets separated into two groups by a barrier and makes one species evolve into another.
Alopatric Speciation:
This is when a species gets divided into 2 groups, not necessarily by a natural barrier, and evolves into 2 new groups to suit their new habitats.
Founder's Effect:
This is when part of a species splits off from the rest and evolves to their new surroundings.
REFLECTION:
This isn't my greatest project, but I didn't have a ton of help from my partner. It's hard for me to pay attention and focus in class especially when I'm so tired in a noisy, packed room. However, for my attention span and the lack of help, I think I put together a relatively nice project. I learned that I need to learn how to say no to people asking to be my partner and to go with a smart person. I also learned that I am very capable of taking the heavy workload and getting a project done. Next time I will find a better partner and I will try to get a better contribution out of them. We did poorly at the start because it was hard to find good information on the Bos Acutifrons. But it was kind of creative to represent the new stages of a cow with bigger sizes of in-n-out burgers for every new species.
