My group, Bretton, Matt, and I, were tasked with solving a world problem. This problem
could range to tangled ear buds to world hunger. We had a brainstorm to think of problems we could solve. We decided on making space travel easier.
Despite this being a rather large problem for a few high schoolers to solve, we looked at it as a challenge and Brett really enjoys space and knows a lot about it. I found the project challenging to follow and work on because of how foreign the subject was.
We first decided to research what parts of space travel are expensive. We found that fuel, the launch, and the retrieval of the rocket are the most expensive parts. We started work on how to reduce the prices of these things.
There was no real way to reduce the cost of fuel without using less of it. So that's what we did. By making rocket stay in space and reducing the fuel used to slow the rocket down, we decreased the necessary fuel amount. Thus decreasing the cost.
We got rid of having to retrieve the rocket by leaving it in space. The downside is that there's more space kink but it saves a considerable amount of money to make it worth it.
We designed our own rocket using kerbal space program. It is a space simulator that you can create and launch rockets in. Our rocket worked well in the simulator and was a success.
During this project I learned that I can go out of my comfort zone. I did this in two ways. I worked with people I wasn't too familiar with and I worked on a topic I was completely unfamiliar with. Next time I'm going to work on being more involved with a project even if I don't understand what it's about. I will do this by finding a job that seems accomplishable for me and selecting that one. Hopefully I will be productive and helpful.
